Outline

System malfunction location	Communication error with Sophisticated Airbag Sensor (SAS) control module
Detection condition	•  The emergency call unit received invalid event notification signal or could not receive any event notification signal from Sophisticated Airbag Sensor (SAS) control module.
Fail-safe	•  Not applicable
Possible cause	•  DTCs are stored in the Sophisticated Airbag Sensor (SAS) control module. ―  Sophisticated Airbag Sensor (SAS) control module malfunction •  Sophisticated Airbag Sensor (SAS) control module connector or terminal malfunction •  Emergency call unit connector or terminal malfunction •  Open circuit in Sophisticated Airbag Sensor (SAS) control module signal circuit •  Emergency call unit malfunction

Diagnostic Procedure

Step	Inspection	Results	Action
1	INSPECT SOPHISTICATED AIRBAG SENSOR (SAS) CONTROL MODULE FOR MALFUNCTION •  Perform the DTC inspection for the Sophisticated Airbag Sensor (SAS) control module. (See DTC INSPECTION.) •  Are any DTCs displayed?	Yes	Repair the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting. (See DTC TABLE [SAS CONTROL MODULE (STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM)].) (See DTC TABLE [SAS CONTROL MODULE (TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM)].)
		No	Go to the next step.
2	INSPECT SOPHISTICATED AIRBAG SENSOR (SAS) CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR FOR MALFUNCTION Warning •  Handling the component parts improperly can accidentally operate (deploy) the air bag module, which may seriously injure you. Read the service warnings/cautions and the workshop manual before handling the air bag system components. (See AIR BAG SYSTEM SERVICE WARNINGS [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) (See AIR BAG SYSTEM SERVICE CAUTIONS [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) (See AIR BAG SYSTEM SERVICE WARNINGS [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) (See AIR BAG SYSTEM SERVICE CAUTIONS [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait for 1 min or more. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the driver-side knee air bag module connector. (See KNEE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) (See KNEE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) •  Disconnect the driver-side air bag module connectors. (See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) (See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) •  Remove the clock spring. (See CLOCK SPRING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) (See CLOCK SPRING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) •  Disconnect the passenger-side air bag module connector. (See PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) (See PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) •  Disconnect the driver and passenger-side side air bag module connectors. (See FRONT SEAT BACK TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the driver and passenger-side front seat connectors. (See FRONT SEAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the driver and passenger-side curtain air bag module connectors. (See CURTAIN AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) (See CURTAIN AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) •  Disconnect the driver and passenger-side front pre-tensioner seat belt connectors. (See FRONT SEAT BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.) •  Disconnect the driver and passenger-side rear pre-tensioner seat belt connectors. (See REAR SEAT BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the all Sophisticated Airbag Sensor (SAS) control module connectors. (See SAS CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) (See SAS CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].) •  Are the connector and terminal normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
		No	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification.
3	INSPECT EMERGENCY CALL UNIT CONNECTOR FOR MALFUNCTION •  Inspect the applicable connector and terminal. (See CONNECTOR INSPECTION.) •  Are the connector and terminal normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
		No	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification.
4	INSPECT SOPHISTICATED AIRBAG SENSOR (SAS) CONTROL MODULE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT •  Inspect the applicable circuit for an open circuit. (See CIRCUIT INSPECTION.) •  Is the circuit normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
		No	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification.
Repair completion verification 1	VERIFY THAT VEHICLE IS REPAIRED •  Install/connect the part removed/disconnected during the troubleshooting procedure. •  Clear the DTC recorded in the memory. (See CLEARING DTC.) •  Perform the DTC inspection for the emergency call unit. (See DTC INSPECTION.) •  Is the same Pending DTC present?	Yes	Refer to the controller area network (CAN) malfunction diagnosis flow to inspect for a CAN communication error. (See CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK (CAN) MALFUNCTION DIAGNOSIS FLOW [(E)].) If the CAN communication is normal, perform the diagnosis from Step 1. •  If the malfunction recurs, replace the emergency call unit, then go to the next step. (See EMERGENCY CALL UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
		No	Go to the next step.
Repair completion verification 2	VERIFY IF OTHER DTC IS DISPLAYED •  Perform the DTC inspection. (See DTC INSPECTION.) •  Are any other DTCs displayed?	Yes	Repair the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting.
		No	DTC troubleshooting completed.
